LOCKHEED MARTIN DONATES $100K TO SUPPORT SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING EDUCATION

(Bradenton, FL. – November 15, 2010) For the fifth consecutive year, Lockheed Martin has donated $100,000 to the Manatee County School District to support science, engineering, math and technology education in our community. Gary Cambre, Lockheed Martin’s area Manager of Communications and Community Relations presented the most recent donation to the Manatee County School Board at an October Board Meeting. (See attached photo of Mr. Cambre handing the check to Manatee Education Foundation Director Mary Glass is being distributed with this release.)

“Lockheed Martin is a great friend to education in Manatee County,” Mary Glass said. “Among many areas they are involved in with the school district, Lockheed Martin sponsors the Manatee Regional Science and Engineering Fair and the Technology Student Association (TSA) District Competition. Events like these reward and recognize our most promising young science and engineering students.”

Last year, more than 200 young scientists ranging from sixth to 12th grade competed for awards in 14 different scientific categories at the Science and Engineering Fair. More than 30 judges from the local scientific community evaluated the projects and selected winners who went on to compete at the Society for Science and the Public International Science and Engineering Fair in Nevada.

In addition to the Science and Engineering Fair and TSA District Competition, Lockheed Martin also sponsors an annual Space Day involving Kinnan and Abel Elementary Schools that is designed to excite students about careers in math and science. Now in its fourth year, Lockheed Martin also sponsors the Institute for Science Teaching at the South Florida Museum where teachers get hands-on science curriculum instruction.
